Industrial Door Buyer's Guide

How to Specify Sectional Industrial Doors for a Warehouse

Published 16 October 2026 · By the Senhai Garage Doors team

An industrial garage door should be selected around the opening, available clearances, traffic pattern and operating environment—not only its width and height. This guide gives contractors, distributors and project buyers a practical specification checklist for warehouse and workshop doors.

1. Start With the Opening and Clearances

Record the finished opening width and height, then measure the headroom above the lintel and side room beside both jambs. Also note the roof structure, beams, services and lighting that may conflict with tracks or the open door.

For new construction, mark whether the dimensions are structural, finished or still subject to cladding and floor build-up. For an existing building, clear photos from inside and outside help the manufacturer understand the surrounding conditions.

2. Match the Door System to the Job

Door systemCommon decision drivers
Industrial sectional doorExterior enclosure, security, optional insulated panels and overhead storage
High-speed doorFrequent traffic, faster access and separation between operational areas
Roller shutterCompact curtain storage and straightforward commercial or service openings
Combined arrangementA sectional exterior door with a high-speed interior door where functions differ

There is no single best industrial door for every warehouse. The correct option depends on which requirement is primary and which compromises are acceptable for the site.

3. Define Operating Duty, Controls and Safety

State how often the opening is expected to operate, the types of vehicles or people passing through it, and whether the door is normally open, normally closed or only used at shift changes. This information helps the supplier review the operating system and control logic.

Also identify the required control method—push button, remote control, access signal or another project-defined input—and the safety functions expected by the project. Final controls and safety devices should be agreed in the written technical scope rather than assumed.

4. Panel, Insulation and Environment

For a sectional industrial door, choose between single-skin and insulated panel options based on the building use and project requirement. Note whether the opening is exposed to dust, coastal humidity, wash-down, temperature differences or other conditions that may affect the finish, seals or hardware selection.

If a project has a specified wind requirement, corrosion class, thermal target or other performance criterion, include it in the enquiry with the applicable project documentation. The supplier should confirm whether the proposed configuration addresses it; it should not be inferred from a generic product page.

One line in the door schedule is not enough

“Industrial sectional door, 4 × 4 m” leaves out clearances, duty, environment, power, controls, safety and delivery scope. Those details can change the configuration and quotation.

5. The Minimum Enquiry Schedule

A multi-door project should use a door schedule so that each opening can be checked and quoted without losing revision control.

6. Compare Quotations on the Same Scope

Check that each quotation identifies the panel system, finish, tracks and hardware, operator, controls, safety devices, power requirement, packing, delivery terms, exclusions and documentation. A lower total is not directly comparable if one quotation omits controls, freight or another required item.

Senhai manufactures custom door systems in China for export projects. The final configuration is confirmed from submitted dimensions and requirements before production; local installation or site measurement is not implied unless separately stated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What information is needed to quote a warehouse sectional door?

Provide opening width and height, headroom and side room, quantity, operating frequency, indoor and outdoor conditions, available power, required controls and safety devices, destination and any project-specific wind or access requirements.

When should a warehouse use a sectional door instead of a high-speed door?

A sectional door is commonly considered where enclosure, security, insulation and a robust exterior opening are the priorities. A high-speed door is considered where frequent traffic, faster access or separation between operational zones is more important. Some facilities use both.

Are industrial sectional doors made in standard sizes?

Industrial openings vary, so project doors are normally reviewed against the actual opening, clearances, use and site conditions. The manufacturer should confirm the workable configuration before production.
